  • Some Thoughts on Firearms Training

    Some Thoughts on Firearms Training

    And a Brief History

I first got involved with firearms, firearms training, concealed carry and self-defense a little over fifteen years ago. At the time, I lived in Colorado, (and I still do).  Back then however, Colorado was considered a "may-issue" state.

That means that state law was silent on the issuance of permits to allow ordinary citizens to carry concealed weapons. It was up to the individual sheriff of each county to 1) decide if they wanted to allow residents to legally carry concealed weapons, and 2) if so, what the requirements to qualify would be.

At that time, most county sheriffs in Colorado simply chose not to issue CCW permits to common citizens (subjects).

Like many other states, Colorado has since become a "shall-issue" state, which means that every County Sheriff MUST issue a CCW to qualified residents of that county, and the state has dictated what those qualifications (and maximum costs) are.  This is a good thing, because no individual sheriff can deny a qualified citizen the legal right to carry a concealed weapon.

State & Local Stun Gun Laws (Updated October, 2017)

We know that State & Local Stun Gun Laws can be confusing, and sometimes even contradictory. Furthermore, those laws are frequently changed, amended, or (sometimes) abolished. As a result, keeping current on your local laws can be overwhelming.

To help you sort through this quagmire, we have listed below a compilation of State & Local Statutes that deal specifically with Stun Guns, Tasers and other non-lethal stunning devices. (These may have various definitions depending on the locality).

Although we believe our information is current at the time of this writing, It is beyond our scope to ensure that this summary of stun gun laws is completely accurate or up-to-date. As such, we make no claims whatsoever regarding the accuracy, currency, or applicability of these statutes to your specific situation.

Please understand that this information is presented as a guideline only; it is up to you, the purchaser, to ultimately determine the legality of your purchase and use of any item according to your current State and Local Statutes.

We do not agree with any legislation that infringes on a person's right to self-protection, by whatever means he or she feels most comfortable with. In fact, we adamantly oppose most, if not all, such legislation. Unfortunately, we are required to abide by these restrictions, however inane they may be.

  • Streetwise Stun Guns FAQ

Streetwise Stun Guns ~ Frequently Asked Questions

Streetwise Stun Guns ... What Are They ... How Do They Work?

Streetwise Stun Guns are an excellent means of self-defense; first as a deterrent and, if need be, they can disable an attacker temporarily by delivering a non-lethal, high-voltage electric shock.

Just test firing one of them into the air is often enough to stop an attack or aggressive activity.

As the bright electric current pulsates between the test prongs it creates an intimidating electrical sight and sound. An attacker with any sense at all will stop in his tracks.

If the sight and sound doesn't stop him a jolt from the unit certainly will!

Simply touching him with the device will deliver a high voltage shock causing loss of balance and muscle control, confusion, and disorientation – bringing him to his knees and making him incapable of further aggressive activity. Full recovery takes about five to ten minutes. There is no permanent harm.

Here is an actual quote from Sgt. Robert Williams who had to use one of our stun guns while working for VPS Security Company in California: "I would like to say what a well made product it is. It enabled me to take down 2 people safely and without any injury. This deterred the crowd that they were with until the police arrived."

Pepper Spray Laws by State (Updated October, 2017)

We know that State & Local Pepper Spray Laws can be confusing, and sometimes even contradictory. Furthermore, those laws are frequently changed, amended, or (sometimes) abolished. As a result, keeping current on your local laws can be overwhelming.

To help you sort through the various state statutes, we have compiled below a summary of each state's laws on the possession and use of non-lethal aerosol weapons.

The information was obtained from letters sent to each State Attorney General, requesting information on current state laws regarding chemical aerosol sprays used for self-defense.

The following summary reflects the various laws on the sale and use of non-lethal spray weapons. In no way should this be regarded as the final word on the legal status of said laws.

This report is not intended to take place of legal counsel nor should it be looked at as being any form of legal advice. Please check with your local authorities to obtain the latest information, as our politicians and bureaucrats have a tendency to change laws from one day to the next.

Remember that Federal law prohibits the carrying of any type of chemical weapon on commercial aircraft, in federal buildings, prisons, and courts.

We do not agree with any legislation that infringes on a person's right to self-protection, by whatever means he or she feels most comfortable with. In fact, we adamantly oppose most, if not all, such legislation. Unfortunately, we are required to abide by these restrictions, however inane they may be.

  • Streetwise Pepper Spray FAQ

    Streetwise Pepper Spray FAQ

    What Is Pepper Spray?

Our Streetwise Pepper Spray is a top selling brand of pepper spray. Pepper spray is generic name for a family of defense sprays which are, essentially, non-lethal chemical compounds that cause immediate and extreme inflammation when sprayed at an attacker, especially when aimed at the eyes and face.

These inflammatory properties make pepper spray an ideal tool for personal self-defense, as well as crowd control and riot suppression.

The primary ingredient in pepper spray is Oleoresin Capsicum (OC). This is also the chemical that makes chili peppers hot.

Commercially available Pepper Spray is typically a combination of capsaicin, water, propylene glycol, and nitrogen or some other gas used as a propellant. Pepper spray is not always based on naturally occurring capsaicin. Some types of pepper sprays are made using synthetic substitutes of oleoresin capsicum..

Regardless of the method used to produce it, when properly used, pepper spray has proven to be extremely effective as a self-defense tool and for crowd control and riot prevention.

  • Function and Safety Checks for a 1911 Pistol

Function and Safety Checks for a 1911 Pistol

Be Sure Your Firearm Is Functioning Properly and Safely.

Perform these Function and Safety Checks for a 1911 Pistol after every cleaning, or partial disassembly of the gun. You can also use them when evaluating a pistol for purchase. These are excellent tests to check the condition of a used 1911 prior to purchasing it.

Generally, if a firearm that I'm considering buying fails any of these tests, I would pass on that particular gun. That's not a hard-and-fast rule, but unless the gun was of such value that it was worth the time, effort and expense of an immediate trip to a qualified gunsmith, I would look at other guns.

Before performing these or any other tests, please ensure that your gun is UNLOADED, and that the gun is ALWAYS pointed in a safe direction.
And, by the way, you do NOT keep ammo near by when you clean or disassemble your guns, right? RIGHT? Right.

  • Five-Count vs Four-Count Drawstroke

A quick look at the classic Five-Count Drawstroke,
and why I have come to prefer a Four-Count Drawstroke.

I'm not saying that the four-count drawstroke is necessarily better than the five-count. However, I will say that personally, I have come to prefer it.

As shown in the video, the four-count drawstroke allows you to acquire a firing position almost immediately after your firearm clears the holster. Simply pivot your weapon so the muzzle is facing forward, and you're in a one-handing firing position. This is similar to the "Speed-Rock" one-hand shooting technique.

The four-count drawstroke also raises the "smack" position (where your firing hand meets your support hand) to your mid- to upper chest area. In my opinion, this is a significant improvement because your two-handed grip is now close to eye level, which allows you to attain your sight picture almost immediately.

I'm sure that some folks will still prefer the classic five-count drawstroke. However, I would urge any serious shooter to at least give the four-count drawstroke some thought. Experiment with it for a while, and then see which one works best for you.

  • Five Modes of Carrying a 1911 Pistol

Five Modes of Carrying a 1911 Pistol

    The Five Conditions of Readiness

Let's define the five readiness conditions that a 1911-style pistol can potentially be in. These can also be termed the five modes of carrying a 1911 pistol.

The late Col. Jeff Cooper, father of the Modern Technique of the Pistol, described the five modes of carrying a 1911 pistol using the terms "Condition 0," "Condition 1," "Condition 2," "Condition 3," and "Condition 4". These conditions are listed in the order of readiness the pistol is in.

In Condition 0, the pistol is ready to fire; in Condition 1, it is one step away from firing; in Condition 2, it is two steps away from firing, and so on down to Condition 4, which is a 'transportation' mode, about as far away from ready to fire as possible, short of disassembly.

These conditions apply primarily to the 1911-style semi-automatic pistol, which was Cooper's favored combat pistol. I have added my explanations and descriptions to his definitions of the Conditions.

  • Handgun Calibers, Ballistics, and Stopping Power

An Overview of Handgun Calibers, Ballistics, and Stopping Power

Trying to put an end to the endless confusion

The subject of Handgun Calibers, Ballistics, and Stopping Power has been a topic of discussion – and often, heated arguments – among firearms enthusiasts for as long as there have been firearms and enthusiasts themselves.

The moment we begin the discussion of caliber and caliber choices, you can hear the age-old rumblings of the ongoing debate between 9mm vs 45, vs 10mm vs 357, etc etc ad nauseum.

We are not going to delve into that discussion; not now anyway. Hopefully, not ever.

In preparation for the day when we do, it's important to first understand the terminology, and second, to have a rudimentary grasp of the physics behind it all: ballistics.

People have devoted entire careers to understanding ballistics. Whole industries are built around the development and production of guns and ammunition that perform to maximum effectiveness for particular situations, and often utilize new handgun calibers. The science behind all this is astoundingly complex, utterly fascinating, and often quite incomprehensible to those of us who are not MIT graduates.

  • Ballistics Data for Pistol Calibers

    Pistol Caliber Ballistics Data

Pistol Caliber Is Not All It's Cracked Up to Be.

As you can see in the chart below, there's not a tremendous difference among the major pistol calibers listed. None of the pistol calibers approach the capacity of a rifle. Period.

Note the bottom entry: a .22 caliber rifle. This bullet is one half the weight of any of the pistol calibers, yet it produces three and four and five times the amount of energy. The reason: its velocity is triple that of any of the pistols. The reason for the increased velocity: lightweight bullet in a long barrel.

It's clear that the weight of the bullet matters, but velocity has more influence than weight on the energy produced. Weight and velocity work together in the formula of 'stopping power,' and they have an influence on each other.

Lighter bullets travel faster, while heavier bullets need more powder to reach adequate speed, which makes the gun produce more felt recoil (kick) when fired, which makes follow up shots more difficult. So you can see that the ongoing debates of perfect caliber will go on forever. Ultimately, your choice of caliber will come down to a matter of personal preference.

  • Criminals Prefer Defenseless Victims

Criminals Prefer Defenseless Victims ... Don't Be One!

    Some Sobering Statistics

Each year, 400 out of every 100,000 people are the defenseless victims of a violent crime. That's a 4 in 1000 probability. Every year.

Statistically, your chances of being involved in a violent encounter are about 1 in 250. If you know 250 people (and most of us do), one of you is likely to be the victim of a violent crime this year. Victims of stalkers are even more prevalent: 1 in 100.

Each year, legally armed citizens use defensive weapons to prevent between 800,000 and 2.5 million violent crimes from happening.

You won't often see these stories that feature NON- Defenseless Victims (who actually fought back) on the evening news: there's not enough tragedy or drama to bother with reporting. They are "non-stories" to the mainstream media. (Hmmm, even the media seems to prefer defenseless victims!)

But to the survivors of the attack, these are the real-life stories of their survival!

    Some Good News

The good new is, violent crime is on the decline, and has been going down for 15 years or more.

That is not not because cops have gotten better ... or that criminals have gotten religion. It's because more and more people have made the decision to be responsible for their own personal protection.

In the last few years, handgun sales have skyrocketed. Nearly every State in the Union now has a form of legalized concealed carry, and more CCW permits have been issued than ever before. Sales of stun-guns and pepper-spray are at an all-time high.

Criminals despise this. They abhor an armed citizenry. They detest people who are alert and aware of their surroundings. They don't like being noticed, and they can't stand the possibility that one of their intended victims might just fight back. And win.

  • Freeze-Dried or Dehydrated Food: Which Is Better?

    Freeze-Dried or Dehydrated Food:

Which Is Better for Long-Term Food Storage?

In a Nutshell, the Answer Is "Yes."

But seriously, rather than just answer "Which is better, Freeze-Dried or Dehydrated Food?" with a simple "A is better than B" ... let's look closely at both methods of food preservation so that you can come to your own conclusions.

Let's first determine why we are drying the food. It's a method of preserving the food for storage. If we remove the moisture from the food, (and we also remove oxygen from the packaging), we have created an environment that will allow the food to be preserved for a very long time. Like 10 or 20 years. That's a long time!

    Freeze-Dried or Dehydrated Food?

There are advantages to both methods, and disadvantages to both. In and of itself, neither method is necessarily "better" than the other; it's more a matter of which method provides the preferred result for a given food type. Some food items are simply better suited to being freeze-dried, while others are better when dehydrated. So whether it's freeze-dried or dehydrated food, the method of preservation will depend on the nature of the food.

The key is to remove moisture from within the food itself, then package that food in an oxygen-free environment.

  • The Cost of Freeze Dried Food

The True Cost of Freeze Dried Food vs. Canning or Freezing

An article published a few years ago in Mother Jones Magazine cites a study that compared freeze-drying to canning and freezing. The article implied that the cost of freeze dried food is too expensive, energy-wise, to be a viable method of food storage.

The study mentioned in the article claims specific energy usage amounts for each of three methods of food preservation: freeze drying, canning, and wet-freezing.

Their conclusion states that freeze drying uses 1.2x and 1.7x more energy than canning or freezing, respectively.

However, as I note below, their conclusions are not based on sound logic.

    The Mother Jones article states:

Freeze-drying is one of the most energy-intensive ways to preserve food, according to R. Paul Singh, a University of California-Davis food science and technology professor. Mountain House freeze-dries its food in 3,000-pound batches over a period of 18 to 20 hours. The final product weights about 900 pounds and takes about 2.4 million Btu of heat to produce – 1.2 times more energy than canning, and 1.7 times more energy than freezing.

  • Before You Buy Emergency Food Storage

Three Things to Consider Before You Buy Emergency Food Storage

Before You Buy Emergency Food Storage, Be Aware of These Important Elements of Survival Food

It's easy to get caught up in today's mania of being prepared for disasters of all kinds. And this is especially true when you get ready to buy emergency food storage for yourself and your family.

And we understand that there is much to be concerned about: America's economy may be on the brink of collapse; many infrastructure systems are under-funded and/or failing; our political climate – at home and abroad – is precarious at best; and of course we always face the potential of storms, floods and other natural disasters. Not to mention, zombies!

Obviously, being prepared with some extra food on hand (and water, and power, and some other tools and gear of various sorts) is a wise decision. It's always better to have and not need, rather than needing and not having!

However, too many people begin their prepping activities in a haphazard fashion, and wind up purchasing too much stuff, too little stuff, or stuff they'll never really use.

When it comes to getting ready to buy emergency food storage, spending a few moments to consider what you truly need, and what you and your family will actually eat, will pay huge dividends in the long run. And take a close look at the companies from whom you're buying, and what they have to offer ... that is also time well spent. You'll be happy you did.

Below, we have outlined what we believe to be the three most critical aspects to consider when you buy emergency food storage products.
