GMO-Free Foods: What Does It Really Mean?
For a food to be certified "GMO-Free," the suppliers must be able to certify that their ingredients do not contain more than 0.9% GMO.
This means the supplier must prove that farmers planted non-GMO seeds, and prevented pollen or other contaminants from neighboring fields from drifting onto their fields. And that they stored and transported the crop separately from GMO crops. And that the separation between GMO and non-GMO crops was maintained throughout all phases of processing, right up to the finished product.
Legacy Foods has established a series of procedures that they employ in order to assure their customers that their foods are GMO-Free. Additionally, Legacy has partnered with Honeyville Foods, who is now the sole supplier of Legacy Foods products.
Honeyville has over 60 years in the food industry, and currently has facilities located in Salt Lake City and Honeyville, Utah; Phoenix, Arizona; Rancho Cucamonga, California; and Cincinnati, Ohio. Their facilities are among the highest-rated in the country, with SQF Level 2 (NSF) certifications, and third-party certifications in non-GMO, gluten-free, kosher, halal, and organic products.
The partnership between Legacy and Honeyville further ensures that all Legacy Food products maintain the highest quality standards as well as their GMO-Free certifications.
Freeze-Dried or Dehydrated Food:
Which Is Better for Long-Term Food Storage?
In a Nutshell, the Answer Is "Yes."
But seriously, rather than just answer "Which is better, Freeze-Dried or Dehydrated Food?" with a simple "A is better than B" ... let's look closely at both methods of food preservation so that you can come to your own conclusions.
Let's first determine why we are drying the food. It's a method of preserving the food for storage. If we remove the moisture from the food, (and we also remove oxygen from the packaging), we have created an environment that will allow the food to be preserved for a very long time. Like 10 or 20 years. That's a long time!
Freeze-Dried or Dehydrated Food?
There are advantages to both methods, and disadvantages to both. In and of itself, neither method is necessarily "better" than the other; it's more a matter of which method provides the preferred result for a given food type. Some food items are simply better suited to being freeze-dried, while others are better when dehydrated. So whether it's freeze-dried or dehydrated food, the method of preservation will depend on the nature of the food.
The key is to remove moisture from within the food itself, then package that food in an oxygen-free environment.
Mountain House 30-Year Shelf Life
Longest Proven Shelf Life. Period.
Mountain House 30-Year Taste Guarantee
Mountain House 30-Year Shelf Life is backed up by our "Taste Guarantee" that we created to let you know that we stand behind our shelf-life promise. We guarantee your Mountain House meal, in our pouches or cans, will still taste good in 30 years!
We take pride in the shelf life of Mountain House freeze-dried foods. Our nearly 50-year history of using top-quality ingredients, the highest processing standards, and premium packaging materials allows for a shelf life that is unmatched.
And, our food doesn't sit in the warehouse forever either. This means when you buy your food from us, it will still have the longest proven shelf life in the freeze dried emergency food industry.
We are the only brand to fully cook our meals before freeze drying. We make our meals like you do at home, in a cookpot (granted ours is a tad bit bigger). This allows the flavors to mix just right like your meals do at home.
The rest is up to you: store food under dry, sanitary conditions, without prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures and avoiding any environment that could cause damage to the packaging, such as punctures, dents, or rust.
Simply follow these common sense storage tips and you will have emergency food when you need it.
The True Cost of Freeze Dried Food vs. Canning or Freezing
An article published a few years ago in Mother Jones Magazine cites a study that compared freeze-drying to canning and freezing. The article implied that the cost of freeze dried food is too expensive, energy-wise, to be a viable method of food storage.
The study mentioned in the article claims specific energy usage amounts for each of three methods of food preservation: freeze drying, canning, and wet-freezing.
Their conclusion states that freeze drying uses 1.2x and 1.7x more energy than canning or freezing, respectively.
However, as I note below, their conclusions are not based on sound logic.
The Mother Jones article states:Freeze-drying is one of the most energy-intensive ways to preserve food, according to R. Paul Singh, a University of California-Davis food science and technology professor. Mountain House freeze-dries its food in 3,000-pound batches over a period of 18 to 20 hours. The final product weights about 900 pounds and takes about 2.4 million Btu of heat to produce – 1.2 times more energy than canning, and 1.7 times more energy than freezing.
Three Things to Consider Before You Buy Emergency Food Storage
Before You Buy Emergency Food Storage, Be Aware of These Important Elements of Survival Food
It's easy to get caught up in today's mania of being prepared for disasters of all kinds. And this is especially true when you get ready to buy emergency food storage for yourself and your family.
And we understand that there is much to be concerned about: America's economy may be on the brink of collapse; many infrastructure systems are under-funded and/or failing; our political climate – at home and abroad – is precarious at best; and of course we always face the potential of storms, floods and other natural disasters. Not to mention, zombies!
Obviously, being prepared with some extra food on hand (and water, and power, and some other tools and gear of various sorts) is a wise decision. It's always better to have and not need, rather than needing and not having!
However, too many people begin their prepping activities in a haphazard fashion, and wind up purchasing too much stuff, too little stuff, or stuff they'll never really use.
When it comes to getting ready to buy emergency food storage, spending a few moments to consider what you truly need, and what you and your family will actually eat, will pay huge dividends in the long run. And take a close look at the companies from whom you're buying, and what they have to offer ... that is also time well spent. You'll be happy you did.
Below, we have outlined what we believe to be the three most critical aspects to consider when you buy emergency food storage products.

What Are 2000 Calorie Days?
We Use 2000 Calorie Days as a Measurement of How Much Food You May Need
We want to share with you a simple method for calculating the quantity and cost of the food you and your family may need over a given time frame. We call it "2000 Calorie Days."
We begin with a common denominator – the 2000 Calorie Day. This represents an average daily intake of calories for an average person. Needless to say, your individual needs may vary; you can easily make any necessary adjustments.
The 2000 Calorie Day is a fixed value: It is not based on "servings" per se, nor is it actually associated with the name of a food storage package you may be considering.
We have calculated the total calories in each food storage package, and divided that total by 2000. The result is the number of days the package will last at a consumption rate of 2000 calories per day.
We display this "Number of 2000 Calorie Days" in the description of our survival food storage kits that are intended to be long-term food storage supplies.
We did not include this info on packages like beverages, vegetables, etc., since it's unlikely that you'll eat only side dishes for an extended time.)

Legacy Foods Partnership with Honeyville Offers Additional

Partnering with Honeyville will not only enable Legacy Foods to continue to produce the healthiest and tastiest emergency foods, but also assures that all of Legacy's products will continue to be certified GMO-Free, with no trans fat, no cholesterol, low sodium and high fiber contents.
"Since its beginning, Legacy has striven to provide the healthiest – and most delicious – emergency foods, with real ingredients certified by our vendors as ‘GMO-free’ as well as featuring no cholesterol, no trans fat, low sodium, no MSG and high fiber,” said Phil Cox, CEO, Legacy Food Storage.
“With all ingredients now supplied by Honeyville, not only will our foods meet the aforementioned benefits but Honeyville’s additional certifications for dietary restrictions such as gluten-free, lactose-free, and even kosher, will give consumers with these restrictions the confidence they need to make Legacy their emergency food vendor of choice."
Legacy Foods CEO Phil Cox Explains GMO-Free Food Storage
Recently, Phil Cox, CEO of Legacy Foods, talked about GMO-Free Food Storage, and Legacy's practices to ensure that their products meet the rigorous criteria to be Certified GMO-Free.
GMO foods are foods that are genetically modified, also known as genetically engineered (GE) foods. Briefly, genetically modified organisms have been altered at the cellular level either by removing specific genes, or introducing new genes.
The purpose behind these alterations is to create crops that exhibit certain desirable traits, while simultaneously eliminating undesirable traits. For example, some manufacturers of GMO seeds claim that their crops require less water or are more resistant to pests or pesticides.
The broader claim among GMO seed producers is that their crops will have increased yields over normal, non-GMO seeds. That claim has yet to be definitively proven.
2014 USDA Egg Recall Does Not Affect
Legacy Foods or Lindon Farms Products
On Feb. 15, 2014, the USDA issued a recall for over 250,000 pounds of processed egg products from Nutriom LLC, based in Lacey Washington. Nutriom's freeze-dried eggs, which are used in "Ova Easy" and "Crystal Eggs," are being voluntarily recalled because of the potential for Salmonella contamination. This USDA egg recall did not affect any of our products, which include Legacy Foods and Lindon Farms.
According to the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), approximately 226,710 pounds of processed eggs were affected by the recall. The FSIS press release stated that the potentially defective products were produced between Feb. 28, 2013 and Feb. 8, 2014, and have been shipped nationwide, and to U.S. military installations at home and abroad, as well as to locations in Canada.

Serving sizes may vary from person to person, and from company to company. But two thousand calories – typically what an adult would need each day in a survival-type scenario – represents a stable, constant value that can actually be measured and evaluated.
We have calculated the total calories in each food storage kit, and divided that total by 2000. The result is the number of days the kit will last at a consumption rate of 2000 calories per day.
It's also important to note that Legacy Premium does not include 'side dishes' as a serving in their food storage packages. This means that all of the servings in your food storage kit are actually nourishing food that your body can use – not just a sauce or a drink.
When you compare the cost of 2,000 calories among various food storage companies, you'll find that Legacy Premium is one of the lowest priced emergency food storage solutions available anywhere.
