Streetwise Stun Guns Frequently Asked Questions
Streetwise Stun Guns ... What Are They ... How Do They Work?
Streetwise Stun Guns are an excellent means of self-defense; first as a deterrent and, if need be, they can disable an attacker temporarily by delivering a non-lethal, high-voltage electric shock.
Just test firing one of them into the air is often enough to stop an attack or aggressive activity.
As the bright electric current pulsates between the test prongs it creates an intimidating electrical sight and sound. An attacker with any sense at all will stop in his tracks.
If the sight and sound doesn’t stop him a jolt from the unit certainly will!
Simply touching him with the device will deliver a high voltage shock causing loss of balance and muscle control, confusion, and disorientation – bringing him to his knees and making him incapable of further aggressive activity. Full recovery takes about five to ten minutes. There is no permanent harm.
Here is an actual quote from Sgt. Robert Williams who had to use one of our stun guns while working for VPS Security Company in California: “I would like to say what a well made product it is. It enabled me to take down 2 people safely and without any injury. This deterred the crowd that they were with until the police arrived.”
Streetwise ... Who Are They?
Streetwise Products’ humble beginnings date back over 24 years to 1990, when their president began selling wholesale security products from the trunk of his car. Today Streetwise is a leader in the stun gun industry, selling their products throughout the US and exporting to many foreign countries. With over 40 models of Streetwise stun guns, stun batons and stun flashlights, we offer a model that will fit every need and every budget.
Some models are designed primarily for men; others, such as “the Hottie” are for women, and the “Security Guard” series is for police and security personnel. Some models are cleverly disguised to look like a cell phone or a canister of perfume, and some are small and easy to conceal like the “Small Fry” series. Their stun batons are large and intimidating, while some models are small enough to attach to your keychain.
Streetwise Offers Three Brands of Stun Guns. Why?
STREETWISE:The Streetwise brand has been available on the market for the longest period of time. Through the years the Streetwise name has become one of the most recognizable brands in the industry and has separated itself from competing brands because of its superior quality. The Streetwise brand is ideal for individuals looking for a reputable brand, top quality, a lifetime warranty, and the peace of mind that comes from knowing they (or their loved one) are carrying a “time tested” self-defense product.
POLICE FORCE:The Police Force brand is actually part of the Streetwise Brand, but with an important difference. While the Streetwise brand is designed for use by individuals, the Police Force brand is designed to be used on a regular basis by professionals under rigorous conditions. Most of these models are made of military grade aluminum, making them as tough as those who carry them. Although Police Force is engineered to meet the demands of Police, Military and Security Professionals worldwide, they are also available to civilians.
JOLT:The Jolt brand appeals to those who are looking for a good quality stun gun, at the lowest possible price and high model number. In the last several years many new companies have entered the market, claiming very high voltage outputs and offering low prices. These new off-brand models offer no lifetime warranty, are not covered by any product liability insurance, and are inferior to “Streetwise Quality.” Streetwise Products’ answer was the Jolt. Although the quality of the Jolt brand is better than most of those “off” brands, it is not as high as their other two brands.
What's the Buzz about Voltage?
To put some perspective on this mysterious (and dramatically exaggerated) aspect of stun gun marketing, you must first realize that at the present time, the industry is unregulated. Which explains why voltage claims have risen so dramatically in recent years.
When Streetwise began selling stun guns in the early 1990s, the highest voltage outputs were in the neighborhood of 300,000 volts. Over the next few years, the voltages began to rise, and seemed to level off at around one million volts. Then, in the last five years or so, many new “off brands” have entered the market, with claims of 5, 10 or 20 million volts.
Streetwise contacted electrical engineers in the US, and stun gun manufacturers in China, and learned that the actual voltage output of a stun gun is extremely difficult to measure and verify. However, these same engineers, designers and manufacturers all agreed that it is simply not possible for a stun gun to produce over a million volts.
As a result, Streetwise has removed the word “voltage” (and any actual voltage output references) from their products. Their model numbers merely reflect the comparison between their model and those of others who claim a given (usually exceedingly high) voltage rating.
To make their position transparent and understandable, Streetwise clearly states on their website and their packaging: “Actual voltage is difficult to measure and verify, but this unit compares to other brands that claim to be 5,000,000 or more volts.”
This confusing (and unfortunately often misleading) issue may soon resolve itself: we are starting to see some other brands removing “volts” from their packaging and marketing. Hopefully, this will help restore credibility to the overall marketing of stun guns.
Are Stun Guns Legal?
There are no specific federal laws (that we are aware of) regarding the purchase or possession of stun guns, stun batons, stun flashlights, and stunning devices in general.
However, there are restrictions on where you are allowed to carry them. For example, most federal buildings now require visitors to endure a bodily search and/or pass through a metal detector. And we would presume that they would confiscate any stunning device that they find. We cannot say for certain whether you might be subject to any further detainment or prosecution. And of course, don’t even think about boarding an airplane with one …
State and local laws regarding stunning devices are both plentiful and diverse. The good news is that, as of late, most states allow the purchase, possession, and carrying of stun guns. Many states have some restrictions – mostly concerning age (at least 18 or 21 years old), prior criminal history, and proper usage of the device.
There are currently only two states that have outright bans on stun guns: Hawaii and Rhode Island. And two notable cities have bans in place: New York City, and Chicago.
Illinois requires the purchaser to have a valid FOID Card; Wisconsin requires a valid CCW.
Michigan requires that the purchaser have a valid concealed pistol license, and that s/he receives proper training at the time of the sale.
And Massachusetts needs to be included in the list of ‘restricted’ states in that stun guns are legal, but the owner needs a carry permit, and the stun gun must be stored ‘properly.’
You should also be aware that many local jurisdictions have ordinances regarding stun guns. It is up to you to ensure that your purchase or possession of a stunning device is in compliance with those laws.
For a reasonably comprehensive listing of states with restrictions on stun guns, please see our Stun Gun Laws page.
While we attempt to keep current on state (and some local) laws, we cannot guarantee that our information is totally accurate or up-to-date. Please understand that it is up to you to ensure that your purchase or possession of any item is legal in your state and local area.
