Some Thoughts on Firearms Training
And a Brief History
I first got involved with firearms, firearms training, concealed carry and self-defense at the end of the last century. Haha, that sounds funny; I guess it was 1998 or 1999. At the time, I lived in Colorado, (and I still do). Back then however, Colorado was considered a "may-issue" state.
That means that state law was silent on the issuance of permits to allow ordinary citizens to carry concealed weapons. It was up to the individual sheriff of each county to 1) decide if they wanted to allow residents to legally carry concealed weapons, and 2) if so, what the requirements to qualify would be.
At that time, most county sheriffs in Colorado simply chose not to issue CCW permits to common citizens (subjects).
Like many other states, Colorado has since become a "shall-issue" state, which means that every County Sheriff MUST issue a CCW to qualified residents of that county, and the state has dictated what those qualifications (and maximum costs) are. This is a good thing, because no individual sheriff can deny a qualified citizen the legal right to carry a concealed weapon.

State & Local Stun Gun Laws

Streetwise Stun Guns ~ Frequently Asked Questions
Streetwise Stun Guns ... What Are They ... How Do They Work?
Streetwise Stun Guns are an excellent means of self-defense; first as a deterrent and, if need be, they can disable an attacker temporarily by delivering a non-lethal, high-voltage electric shock.
Just test firing one of them into the air is often enough to stop an attack or aggressive activity.
As the bright electric current pulsates between the test prongs it creates an intimidating electrical sight and sound. An attacker with any sense at all will stop in his tracks.
If the sight and sound doesn't stop him a jolt from the unit certainly will!
Simply touching him with the device will deliver a high voltage shock causing loss of balance and muscle control, confusion, and disorientation – bringing him to his knees and making him incapable of further aggressive activity. Full recovery takes about five to ten minutes. There is no permanent harm.
Here is an actual quote from Sgt. Robert Williams who had to use one of our stun guns while working for VPS Security Company in California: "I would like to say what a well made product it is. It enabled me to take down 2 people safely and without any injury. This deterred the crowd that they were with until the police arrived."
Restricted Items Information ~ Pepper Spray Laws
Pepper Spray Laws by State (Updated October, 2017)
We know that State & Local Pepper Spray Laws can be confusing, and sometimes even contradictory. Furthermore, those laws are frequently changed, amended, or (sometimes) abolished. As a result, keeping current on your local laws can be overwhelming.
To help you sort through the various state statutes, we have compiled below a summary of each state's laws on the possession and use of non-lethal aerosol weapons.
The information was obtained from letters sent to each State Attorney General, requesting information on current state laws regarding chemical aerosol sprays used for self-defense.
The following summary reflects the various laws on the sale and use of non-lethal spray weapons. In no way should this be regarded as the final word on the legal status of said laws.
This report is not intended to take place of legal counsel nor should it be looked at as being any form of legal advice. Please check with your local authorities to obtain the latest information, as our politicians and bureaucrats have a tendency to change laws from one day to the next.
Remember that Federal law prohibits the carrying of any type of chemical weapon on commercial aircraft, in federal buildings, prisons, and courts.
We do not agree with any legislation that infringes on a person's right to self-protection, by whatever means he or she feels most comfortable with. In fact, we adamantly oppose most, if not all, such legislation. Unfortunately, we are required to abide by these restrictions, however inane they may be.
Streetwise Pepper Spray FAQ
What Is Pepper Spray?
Our Streetwise Pepper Spray is a top selling brand of pepper spray. Pepper spray is generic name for a family of defense sprays which are, essentially, non-lethal chemical compounds that cause immediate and extreme inflammation when sprayed at an attacker, especially when aimed at the eyes and face.
These inflammatory properties make pepper spray an ideal tool for personal self-defense, as well as crowd control and riot suppression.
The primary ingredient in pepper spray is Oleoresin Capsicum (OC). This is also the chemical that makes chili peppers hot.
Commercially available Pepper Spray is typically a combination of capsaicin, water, propylene glycol, and nitrogen or some other gas used as a propellant. Pepper spray is not always based on naturally occurring capsaicin. Some types of pepper sprays are made using synthetic substitutes of oleoresin capsicum..
Regardless of the method used to produce it, when properly used, pepper spray has proven to be extremely effective as a self-defense tool and for crowd control and riot prevention.

Too Close to Home: The Tragic Tale of an Unintentional Shooting
This is the true story of one of my handgun students who was involved in an unintentional shooting. He accidentally shot his brother in the leg with a rifle.
I heard about this incident several months after it had occurred, and sent an email to the shooter, let's call him JC. He had graduated from of one of my handgun training classes a few years before this event took place.
He replied to my email with the details of the incident, and offered his gracious permission for me to publish his story.
As he describes, there were several factors which culminated in this tragedy. Remove any one of them, and this unintentional shooting would not have happened.
Here is his story, as he described it in an email he sent to me.

"I Can't Believe This Is Happening ... And I Don't Know What To Do!"
Apparently, whoever said that didn't have a plan. What's worse, they didn't even know that they didn't have a plan. Because they never thought that they’d need a plan ... for this!
Whatever THIS is, it took them completely by surprise.
We often forget that even really good people in really good neighborhoods living really good lives, can be confronted with really really bad things.

GMO-Free Foods: What Does It Really Mean?
For a food to be certified "GMO-Free," the suppliers must be able to certify that their ingredients do not contain more than 0.9% GMO.
This means the supplier must prove that farmers planted non-GMO seeds, and prevented pollen or other contaminants from neighboring fields from drifting onto their fields. And that they stored and transported the crop separately from GMO crops. And that the separation between GMO and non-GMO crops was maintained throughout all phases of processing, right up to the finished product.
Legacy Foods has established a series of procedures that they employ in order to assure their customers that their foods are GMO-Free. Additionally, Legacy has partnered with Honeyville Foods, who is now the sole supplier of Legacy Foods products.
Honeyville has over 60 years in the food industry, and currently has facilities located in Salt Lake City and Honeyville, Utah; Phoenix, Arizona; Rancho Cucamonga, California; and Cincinnati, Ohio. Their facilities are among the highest-rated in the country, with SQF Level 2 (NSF) certifications, and third-party certifications in non-GMO, gluten-free, kosher, halal, and organic products.
The partnership between Legacy and Honeyville further ensures that all Legacy Food products maintain the highest quality standards as well as their GMO-Free certifications.
Function and Safety Checks for a 1911 Pistol
Be Sure Your Firearm Is Functioning Properly and Safely.
Perform these Function and Safety Checks for a 1911 Pistol after every cleaning, or partial disassembly of the gun. You can also use them when evaluating a pistol for purchase. These are excellent tests to check the condition of a used 1911 prior to purchasing it.
Generally, if a firearm that I'm considering buying fails any of these tests, I would pass on that particular gun. That's not a hard-and-fast rule, but unless the gun was of such value that it was worth the time, effort and expense of an immediate trip to a qualified gunsmith, I would look at other guns.
Before performing these or any other tests, please ensure that your gun is UNLOADED, and that the gun is ALWAYS pointed in a safe direction.
And, by the way, you do NOT keep ammo near by when you clean or disassemble your guns, right? RIGHT? Right.
A quick look at the classic Five-Count Drawstroke,
and why I have come to prefer a Four-Count Drawstroke.
I'm not saying that the four-count drawstroke is necessarily better than the five-count. However, I will say that personally, I have come to prefer it.
As shown in the video, the four-count drawstroke allows you to acquire a firing position almost immediately after your firearm clears the holster. Simply pivot your weapon so the muzzle is facing forward, and you're in a one-handing firing position. This is similar to the "Speed-Rock" one-hand shooting technique.
The four-count drawstroke also raises the "smack" position (where your firing hand meets your support hand) to your mid- to upper chest area. In my opinion, this is a significant improvement because your two-handed grip is now close to eye level, which allows you to attain your sight picture almost immediately.
I'm sure that some folks will still prefer the classic five-count drawstroke. However, I would urge any serious shooter to at least give the four-count drawstroke some thought. Experiment with it for a while, and then see which one works best for you.
Five Modes of Carrying a 1911 Pistol
The Five Conditions of Readiness
Let's define the five readiness conditions that a 1911-style pistol can potentially be in. These can also be termed the five modes of carrying a 1911 pistol.
The late Col. Jeff Cooper, father of the Modern Technique of the Pistol, described the five modes of carrying a 1911 pistol using the terms "Condition 0," "Condition 1," "Condition 2," "Condition 3," and "Condition 4". These conditions are listed in the order of readiness the pistol is in.
In Condition 0, the pistol is ready to fire; in Condition 1, it is one step away from firing; in Condition 2, it is two steps away from firing, and so on down to Condition 4, which is a 'transportation' mode, about as far away from ready to fire as possible, short of disassembly.
These conditions apply primarily to the 1911-style semi-automatic pistol, which was Cooper's favored combat pistol. I have added my explanations and descriptions to his definitions of the Conditions.

Whooda thunk a new pistol would have a broken extractor?
